Offered for your consideration is a single Burroughs & Wellcome pill tile featuring the official crest and commemoration of the 1617 establishment, by Charles II of England, of the "Worshipful Society of the Art and Mystery of the Apothecaries.
Membership in this society was an honor only awarded to chemists and druggists with formal training, and thus signified the initiation of the concept of "professionalism" in the field.
This very attractive pill tiles measure 6" square and is in unused condition. Minor age-related staining to the paper label is noted as seen in the photos.
This handmade tile originates from Delft, Holland, and was part of a limited edition series commissioned by the Burroughs & Wellcome Company in the 1970s and '80s. The label found on the back of the tile features a description and history of the tile scene.
